Sometimes life is difficult. Whether it's an overwhelming crisis, or slow realisation of things not being right, we can often end up feeling stuck or that life isn’t what we intended. That’s when counselling can help.

About me
My name is Miriam and I’m a counsellor in East Lothian. I have experience working with adolescents (16+), adults and older adults, including people at midlife, and those experiencing life transitions.
I became a counsellor after recognising the difference counselling made in my own life and relationships as well as seeing that happen for many others too.
I have a warm and calm counselling style which I’ve found fits well with those who have experienced trauma and loss, and anxiety.

My training
My COSCA certified Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling is from Robert Gordon University, studying through Human Development Scotland, who specialise in psychodynamic counselling.

Professional membership
I am a registered member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and abide by their Ethical Framework

Ongoing Professional Development
I have regular supervision with a trained and experienced supervisor. I also regularly undertake counselling related training so I am continuing learning, reflecting and improving my practice.

My experience

I have experience working with:

  • anxiety, depression, low self esteem and anger issues;
  • with those who have suffered loss or bereavement;
  • individuals who have suffered trauma or relationship issues,
  • the effects of menopause, midlife and spirituality.

It can often be difficult to identify one particular issue that’s making life hard. Stress might lead to relationship challenges or anger issues, bereavement to anxiety or low self-esteem. We’ll work together with whatever you bring, in a way that feels comfortable, to understand what’s going on for you.

How I work

When we first meet I’ll be interested in what’s brought you to counselling now, and how you hope it might help.

As a psychodynamic counsellor I believe our past experiences often have an effect on our present-day life and relationships, sometimes causing us to get stuck in unhelpful patterns. By working through some of those experiences in counselling it can help us understand how they might be affecting us now. We can then use this insight to make positive changes and create new patterns that are right for us today.

My approach allows you to work at your own pace and use the sessions to talk about whatever feels important to you, without judgement. I’ll use my experience and training to offer insights into what you share and encourage you to explore challenging areas where you feel stuck.

I’m experienced in working short and long term with clients, but recommend you committing to an initial block of six sessions after which we will review progress. For some people that’s enough, others choose to work longer term.
